Last year I read Stephen King’s Book, On Writing. It was really good, as books about writing go. One of the things that stuck with me was that there is nothing new under the sun. There are no new ideas, just new combinations of ideas. He says to take two unrelated things, and combine them […]

Last night’s wacky mayoral debate on social issues started out like a three-ring circus!
In Ottawa, we have 20 candidates running for mayor. Yes, twenty. Jim Watson’s leading the race with about 35%, then Larry O’Brien with maybe 17%, and Clive Doucet and Andy Haydon each have something like 7%. The other 16 candidates […]

Here it is, already Monday again. That was one fast weekend.
I did laundry and housework and played with the birds and read on Saturday. On Sunday, GC and I made a good dent in fixing the front steps. He did the carpentry while I did the cement work. It has to be finished by […]

Yesterday I read a story in the Ottawa Citizen about a 27-year-old Gatineau man who was convicted on child pornography charges. Police had found on his computer about 2,000 animé images of children having sex with adults or other children, plus three photographic images. Animé is Japanese cartoon-style drawings. (I’m not sure whether his […]

On Wednesday GC and I attended a demonstration outside the police station, to show our support for the democratic rights of freedom of assembly and free speech. Also: to show our concern about how Harper, McGuinty and the police mishandled the protest in Toronto.
Personally, I find it utterly contemptible that Toronto’s police chief lied […]

As you know, I spent much of the weekend watching birds having sex. But that wasn’t all I did. I also spent a fair amount of time glued to my computer, monitoring the constant stream of Twitter updates from protesters and journalists at the G8/G20 protests in Toronto. Trying to make sense of it.
At […]

Last night CBC’s Sunday Edition hosted a community forum called “Tough Justice: Is the Harper agenda a phony war on crime?”
It drew a full house at the Gladstone Theatre. The first hour consisted of questions and answers posed by Michael Enright to the six panelists. The second hour was questions from the audience.
The panelists […]

Wednesday we stumbled across porn at the Experimental Farm, and Thursday we stumbled upon a crime scene. It was tucked in amongst a few outbuildings over near Cow Lane. There were four marked police cars, three paramedic vehicles, one fire truck and a couple of unmarked vehicles.
Emergency personnel were swarming around a vehicle with […]

I’ve been a little delinquent on the blogging front lately because my brain fell out.
Meanwhile, life has continued to unravel as life does, and now I’ve got a bit of a backlog of things to blog about.
For example. Last night GC and I went to Paul Dewar’s art auction for Haiti at the Cube […]

On Day 2 of the COPE program, I learned I was an INFP in the Myers-Briggs personality assessment – Introverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, Perceptive. I did an online version awhile back and apparently I’ve changed from a thinker to a feeler since then. Not sure how I feel about that (or what I think of it, […]
