If you’ve ever driven past the Shepherds of Good Hope, on Murray Street near King Edward, you might have felt a little intimidated by the clusters of ragged street people who live on the fringes of society and who congregate outside the shelter. Some of them smoke and talk amongst themselves. Some talk to themselves. […]

Did you hear about Project CRACKDOWN and the resulting police sweep of the Byward Market? The Ottawa Police’s Street Crimes Unit spent four months investigating open drug use in the Market and then conducted a sweep of low-level street dealers on Thursday in preparation for tourist season.
Tourist season.
Think about it. That’s how we define […]

These are some of my favourite posts from my blog, as best as I can remember. I expect it’ll change a lot over time. If you have a favourite post that isn’t on my list, let me know – maybe I’ll add a Readers’ Favourite Posts section.

I’ve spent 15 of the past 17 hours in bed with Duncan and a wicked headache. The other two hours involved stuffing Duncan into his leopard-skin carrying case and dragging him over to the vet’s for his annual checkup, where it was revealed that he has gained two-tenths of a kilo and now weighs 9.5 […]

Gabor Maté at CCHC, March 4, 2009
Dr. Gabor Maté spoke in a small, packed room at the Centretown Community Health Centre a couple of days ago. He’s a physician whose clients are primarily hardcore drug addicts in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside.
[Also appearing at the same event was Dr. Samantha King, who wrote […]

My friend Donna invited me over for dinner last night and we drank wine and ate fish and talked about Romanian orphanages, Columbian drug cartel prisoners, child abuse, depressing movies, Karla Homolka, addiction, poverty, prisons, Stephen Harper, the economy, child slavery, puppy mills and post-traumatic stress syndrome.
One heavy topic seemed to lead into the […]

A couple of weeks ago I attended a panel discussion about “harm reduction in a socio-political context,” sponsored by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse.
During the audience Q&As, a young man named Max Rowsell took the microphone. He told us that he has been using opiates intravenously for three years, and he just found […]

You Are Scrabble
You are incredibly clever and witty. You can talk your way out of (and into) situations easily.
You are an excellent decision maker. You are good at weighing the options in front of you.
You’re the type of person who can make something out of nothing. You are very resourceful.
You know a lot of things. […]

After work today, GC and I attended two very different events: Marion Dewar’s Lying in State at City Hall, followed by the Sex Trade Workers Rally on Parliament Hill.
The lineup inside City Hall led directly to Marion Dewar’s five children, where we could offer our condolences before filing past the closed casket and signing […]
