Officer Post: The Bank Street Bully
I called the Ottawa Police the other day to request a status update on the investigation into the Bank Street Bully incident in December.
The investigating officer told me, in essence, that the investigation by the Professional Standards Section has gone nowhere and will be closed soon. The unconscious […]

Dr. Samantha King, author of Pink Ribbons Inc.: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy, spoke about the commercialization of breast cancer at the Centretown Community Health Centre last week.
She noted that it wasn’t so long ago that breast cancer carried considerable stigma. Efforts to bring the disease out into the open were highly […]

Gabor Maté at CCHC, March 4, 2009
Dr. Gabor Maté spoke in a small, packed room at the Centretown Community Health Centre a couple of days ago. He’s a physician whose clients are primarily hardcore drug addicts in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside.
[Also appearing at the same event was Dr. Samantha King, who wrote […]

I don’t know about you, but I thought addicts were notoriously irresponsible about disposing of used needles. From everything I’ve heard in the media and at community meetings, our parks, playgrounds, schoolyards and front lawns are practically carpeted in used needles.

I went to a community meeting at the library on Thursday night about the proposed SCAN legislation (Bill 106) introduced by Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi. (Who, incidentally, recognized me, shook my hand, told me he had read my blog, and said his mother would be proud that I had said he was polite.)
According to […]

I spent a frosty lunch hour at City Hall today, at a rally to support the striking OC Transpo bus drivers and mechanics.
I don’t even care if the City’s offer was fair. No trade unionist with any sense of what it means to be a trade unionist could possibly, in good conscience, have voted […]

Okay, I did it. I met with the investigating officers from the Professional Standards section of the Ottawa Police regarding their investigation into the events that led to my Bank Street Bully post. They interviewed me quite thoroughly this afternoon in my living room. (I requested that we meet here because of the bus […]

Remember back in the 1990s when Ontario Education Minister John Snobelen was caught boasting of the evil Conservative scheme to ‘manufacture a crisis’ in education? Basically, the scheme involved deliberately deceiving the public into believing that education spending was out of control, that educational standards were going down the toilet, that teachers were to blame, […]

The bus strike and the blizzard seem almost divinely synchronized for maximum impact on the city. I predict chaos and paralysis if this strike is not averted. It was bad enough trying to get home tonight, with just the blizzard.
Mayor Larry, on his blog, keeps saying things like “It would be sad if there were […]
