The hardest part is the fear. Since I don’t know the magnitude of the problem yet – ie, what stage it is, and whether the cancer has spread beyond the original tumour – I sometimes feel very much at the mercy of my worst fears.
I was lying in bed this morning thinking about the […]

I’m so touched by all the support I’ve been getting from everybody over the past couple of days. It’s overwhelming, and deeply, deeply touching. And it certainly brightens up the darker, scarier corners of my mind.
I’m still getting used to the idea that I have cancer. One of the things I’ve noticed is that my […]

It all started with a routine mammogram in March, just a few days before I got laid off. The mammogram was no big deal: I’ve had haircuts that hurt more.
Did you know that immediately after they do the mammogram, a nurse conducts a physical breast exam? The nurse found a lump, but for some […]

Officer Post: The Bank Street Bully
I called the Ottawa Police the other day to request a status update on the investigation into the Bank Street Bully incident in December.
The investigating officer told me, in essence, that the investigation by the Professional Standards Section has gone nowhere and will be closed soon. The unconscious […]

I don’t know about you, but I thought addicts were notoriously irresponsible about disposing of used needles. From everything I’ve heard in the media and at community meetings, our parks, playgrounds, schoolyards and front lawns are practically carpeted in used needles.
There’s no question some needles are ending up in those places. But apparently it’s not […]

I went to a community meeting at the library on Thursday night about the proposed SCAN legislation (Bill 106) introduced by Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi. (Who, incidentally, recognized me, shook my hand, told me he had read my blog, and said his mother would be proud that I had said he was polite.)
According to […]

My friend Donna invited me over for dinner last night and we drank wine and ate fish and talked about Romanian orphanages, Columbian drug cartel prisoners, child abuse, depressing movies, Karla Homolka, addiction, poverty, prisons, Stephen Harper, the economy, child slavery, puppy mills and post-traumatic stress syndrome.
One heavy topic seemed to lead into the […]

Over the past couple of days, thousands of people have visited this blog to read about the Bank Street Bully, and many of you subsequently blogged about it on your own blogs. It has generated a lot of discussion, both on this blog and others.
Apparently a number of you also contacted the Ottawa Police […]

I arrived at the corner of Bank and MacLaren this afternoon as three police officers were trying to put an unconscious, handcuffed woman into the back of a van. She looked like a rag doll.
Then they changed their minds and laid her out on the sidewalk and sent for an ambulance. The female officer slid […]

Last night we were on Nepean Street near Bank Street, and we saw a dead pigeon in the snow. And then another. And another. And another. And another.
We were mystified. We know pigeons aren’t the brightest birds around, but they must have some instinct for survival. What do you suppose happened to them?
