Last night’s wacky mayoral debate on social issues started out like a three-ring circus!
In Ottawa, we have 20 candidates running for mayor. Yes, twenty. Jim Watson’s leading the race with about 35%, then Larry O’Brien with maybe 17%, and Clive Doucet and Andy Haydon each have something like 7%. The other 16 candidates […]

As soon as I heard that three prostitution-related laws had been struck down in Ontario Superior Court yesterday, I knew the federal Conservatives would appeal. Why? Because that’s what they do. They stick their indignant little noses into anything that offends their ideological non-sensibilities, whether it has anything to do with them or not. As […]

I read the other day – I don’t remember where – that when you think you’re about to die, you panic, but when you know you’re about to die, you become very serene.
I’ve thought I was on the brink of death three times in my life. The first time was when I choked on a […]

Did you hear about that doctor in California who tried to break into her boyfriend’s house by going down his chimney? She got wedged in there, about two feet from the bottom, and died of asphyxiation. She wasn’t found until a few days later when she started to smell.
I can’t stop thinking about it. […]

Here it is, already Monday again. That was one fast weekend.
I did laundry and housework and played with the birds and read on Saturday. On Sunday, GC and I made a good dent in fixing the front steps. He did the carpentry while I did the cement work. It has to be finished by […]

I’ve always read the obituaries, ever since I was a little girl. Some people think it’s morbid, but I don’t.
It’s not so much about looking for people I know, though there’s an element of that, of course. It’s mostly about gleaning what I can from the encapsulation of a person’s life in such a […]

I’ve read a few articles over the years about how the Internet rewires our brains. It actually causes physical changes in our brains. Adaptations. I’ve been online since 1989. That’s 21 years. And I’m not a light user, either. I’m a seriously committed, heavy-duty, addicted user. I don’t find it a stretch at all […]

Have you ever screwed something up that was really important to you? That’s what I just did.
I was scheduled to take two tests today to qualify for a pool of government writing jobs. I really want one of these jobs. They’re one of the few government jobs that don’t require bilingualism. Actually they’re one […]

On Friday night, GC and I went to Elmak’s art show at La Petite Mort Gallery. I meant to tell you about it before the show, so you could go too, but unfortunately I dropped that ball.
Elmaks is the street artist who created the Swap Boxes. The show was great, and GC bought a […]

GC decided to take me out for dinner last night because I was a bit frazzled from my day. But we only made it part way down the street when we spotted something that demanded our attention. A van, on the side of the road, perched at a peculiar angle, looking like its axle broke […]
