I first heard about George Guirguis (City Council candidate in Bay Ward) from David Reevely’s blog, when he shared some of the strange emails coming out of that campaign. Reevely also linked to Guirguis’ campaign video.
Well, now he has fifty campaign videos on Youtube. They’re so bizarre. I haven’t watched them all, but from what I’ve seen, they tend to follow one of two formats: a photomontage of pictures of Guirguis, set to a sappy love song, or a video of Guirguis set to a sappy love song. The photomontages always include multiple instances of a picture of Guirguis with Stephen Harper. The videos include lots of footage of Guirguis campaigning and giving the thumbs up to the camera. There’s one where we get to spend two minutes watching him use his computer.
But this one is a little different from the rest, in that it’s got people saying things. (Stupid people saying stupid things, but still.)
This one exploits the Shepherds of Good Hope. It’s obvious from the way he’s making that sandwich that he’s not a regular volunteer – he volunteered for a single shift for the photo op potential. (“What can the Shepherds of Good hope do for me?”)
Anyway. Gorgeous George is a weird narcissistic guy running a weird narcissistic campaign.
Also, geez what a lot of mustard.

Better than George Bush?? That’s quite impressive! He’s got my vote! Especially since he’s got a video where schoolchildren tell us that he never lies. Children are very perceptive about that type of thing, and we know the children are not lying because George Guergis is an honest man. He has met Stephen Harper.
It was very nice of the Shepherds of Good Hope to let him come in there and make sandwiches. Giving downtrodden people something to do is always a good way to help them get places in life. Especially since he was very hungry–so hungry that he had to stop at a Tim Horton’s with his wife to eat a large snack. Since George Guergis is an honest Christian man, he would only let his volunteering for the Shepherds of Good Hope be delayed if he was very, very hungry, and that is unfortunate.

Oh and yeah it nice to see that youth are taking such a strong interest in municipal politics.
I wish I lived in Bay Ward so I could add him to my long list of people I’m not going to vote for. That first video of all the young, vulnerable-looking boys saying crazy stuff like George is going to do away with taxes altogether should maybe be brought to the attention of the authorities.

A vote is a precious commodity. We each only have one vote to use in the race for Bay ward.
City elections are approaching. Letters appear in the newspapers imparting the virtues and integrity of each candidate and why we should vote for a particular one. We see the candidates put their best face forward and think, “yeah, they’re alright.â€

I think Mr. Guirgis will win with a large majority. His YouTube videos seem very popular, more than 20,000 views. I saw him today at a store, people recognize him and come to talk to him. From what I read above (uses too much mustard, uses too much hand towel), these are the complaints by the armchair generals whose voluntary work is likely limited to mostly complaining.
I bet none of you folks go help feed people in need. If I am mistaken, the address you should be looking for is 233 Murray Street, and the name of the place is “Shepherds of Good Hope”.

I just called the shepherds of good hope.and spoke to the manager (613) 562-7845 and Asked her we would like to know how long have been George volunteering at shepherds of good hope.she told me he been their only once ,they never sow him before and never sow him after,So he went just to do his you tube

Thank you for your email. I have been considering your notion that we need fewer Council seats in Ottawa, and have concluded that while it may be true that Calgary has fewer municipal politicians per capita than Ottawa, you should consider the following points:
1) Do residents of Calgary feel they are better represented by having only 14 Councillors? (Please let me know if there any surveys or studies that have been done to measure the political efficacy of voters living in areas with fewer municipal politicians per capita.) Reducing the number of politicians simply increases the workload and further divides the attention of those in office as well as their respective staffers.
2) When there is a smaller per capital number of municipal politicians, it is easier to concentrate power and have agendas rammed through with little or no effective debate, and to have a Mayor commandeer City Hall with a slate of syncophant Councillors. No thank you.
3) Is smaller really better? Since the beginning of the so-called "globalization" era, the basic assumption has been that businesses and governments need to shrink their spending and their payroll, and consolidate wherever possible. The current economic situation shows this assumption to have been wrong (or at least seriously misguided) all along. Just ask the news media how "consolidation" of their industry is working out. On the political side, look at Mike Harris' "Common Sense Revolution" of the 1990's, which in the end seemed to be based on shell games and political trickery rather than a genuine desire to make government better. A lot of that government's "tax cuts" were simply efforts to offload provincial services into the municipal sphere. (Tax shifting, versus tax cutting.)
I can appreciate your desire to bring a business-minded approach to City Hall. While I believe that all politicians should be business-minded in what they do, they should not mistake their workplace itself for a private business.
Beyond the idea of saving a few bucks, I'd be curious to see how reducing the number of Councillors would make for a better City Hall. I'll gladly live in "Pay Ward" if it means having a more effective democracy.
