Meanwhile, back on the sunny side…

Thanks for putting up with my whining yesterday. I’m feeling a little better today. Just admitting it and writing it down seemed to help. And the comments were comforting too. Today I’m back to looking at the bright side, at least intermittently.

Life might not be completely perfect, but I’ve got a lot of good stuff going on.

For starters, the sun is shining insanely out there in the thirty-below-zero-with-the-windchill sky, and my Christmas Cactus is blooming.

Secondly, I don’t have cancer anymore, and I’m in better shape, pain-and-mobility-wise, than I was before the back surgery. So even though I’ve got some lingering health issues, they’re much better than the ones I used to have.

Third, the financial situation, though a little worrisome, isn’t dire. I’ve got time to figure it out. Even if I lose my house, which isn’t going to happen, I’ve got enough yarn and books to keep me going for at least a couple more years, so I’ll be okay.

Also, I’m in love with someone special who bakes me apple-cranberry muffins and is always up for an adventure or an ice cream cone or adopting lovebirds or writing a novel or whatever wacky idea I come up with.

I’ve got a wonderful son who ends every phone conversation with “I love you Mom.” (And he gave me a gift certificate for Blue Moon Fiber Arts for my birthday. Can you believe that?)

I’ve got a very special giant cat who is crazy about me and never lets me forget it.

And I’ve got all of you.

But wait! There’s more!

Three skeins of yarn from Wandering Cat Studios

Three skeins of yarn from Wandering Cat Studios

My three skeins of luxury yarn were delivered yesterday and they are delicious. Two of them (Forest Floor and Green Onions) are merino/cashmere/nylon; the third (Mermaid’s Tail) is merino/alpaca lace They’re from the local Wandering Cat Studios‘ Etsy shop. There was a special cat birthday celebration going on over there, so there was free shipping and a contest and (insert drum roll here) I WON the contest! I don’t know what I won yet, but I’m excited. I hardly ever win stuff. One time about 30 years ago I won the grand prize at an Icelandic Christmas party: it was a flexible pencil. (I so rarely win stuff, it makes a permanent impression on me when I do.)

Wake up Duncan, there's new yarn!

Okay, gotta run. I’ve got some real work and a real deadline, and I’m having an MRI this morning too. They want to get a better look at the thing they’re pretty sure is a fibroid in my uterus. (Before this year, I’d never had an MRI. This will be my sixth one!)

I hope the sun is shining wherever you are today too.

  • I ADORE THAT FOREST FLOOR yarn! I want to make Papa Pan a hat and its hard to pick something for him he remains steadfast in wearing the blue mariners cap his mom knit for him 30 years ago. I want to give him a second option that doesn’t scream LOBSTERMAN!

I covetted that flexible pencil! You won it for finding the whole almond in giant bowls of yucky rice pudding! :-)

  • Glad you like the yarn! I hope Duncan doesn’t treat it like Rocky treats mine!

  • Mudmama, the Forest Floor is my favourite. (Online I loved the Mermaid’s Tail the best, and it’s just as wonderful as I thought it would be – but the Forest Floor is more wonderful than I expected.) I’m amazed that you remember that contest. I thought I only remembered it because I won!

Valerie, I love it. Thank you so much. Duncan is pretty good about yarn. He’ll play with it if my son dangles a piece in front of him, but otherwise he leaves it alone.

  • Duncan has that “You woke me up for this?” look cats get when you disturb their napping.

  • Ah, yarn, a tolerant kitty, sunbeams, a man who loves you… Here’s to glass-half-full days! Still, remember that you can always whine to us about the other half. We’re tough and we can take it. Hugs from north Florida, where the suns just came out this morning for the first time in more than a week and the temps will never reach 30 below. (Thank the gods!)

  • Um, that should say “sun”, as in singular. Although it’s more interesting to contemplate plural suns, doncha think? (Damn typos!)

  • Glad to see-like Tony said, today your glass if half full,
    sound’s like 3/4 to me!!!
Sometimes life deals a real crappy hand… I have had a year like that too.
Even though Duncan is a pest at night he really loves you to death.
I hope your MRI goes well and that your finances pick up
Go buy a lottery ticket of some sort.
Maybe with all the wool you have, you’d consider knitting
a friend a really warm pair of slippers( ankle High)(Size 7)
I’ll trade you for a gourmet dinner (Wine included)as already promised
    Smile Zoom!!!!

I was pretty sure, in your previous post, that you were just in one of those temporary funks that happen (like, “shit happens”). I am glad to see it did not linger. Or, even if it did, you are faking it until you make it, i.e. feel sunnier. It’s like that “relentlessly cheerful” stunt I tried to pull last winter. Gack, how awful was that? But it too passed.

In a week, the days start to get longer!

My Christmas cactus is blooming too. It languished the whole time it lived in the condo as did I. For a number of reasons the seven years from 2002 on were a bit of a bust and I can tell you that, coming out of a bad time, I’m planning not to take the current upswing of 2009 for granted. I hope that you’re only moments behind me.

Beautiful yarns! That would brighten up any knitter’s day! Glad you are sunny-side up again!

  • a nonny muss

Zoom, so glad you’re remembering to look at the positive! Here’s a bit more positive for you: uterine fibroids are “old technology” and can be removed with incision-free surgery. I had one a year ago that was sited half inside the uterus causing excessive bleeding (in turn requiring blood transfusion!). When the hormonal treatment didn’t resolve it, it was surgically removed. As a bonus, I seem to have hit menopause with its removal! It could be just a coincidence of timing, but I like the result either way. LOL
