I was poking around on Ravelry, looking for things to knit, and I came across the Chevron, which sounds like a car but is really a scarf.
I’m a little late to the Chevron party, because it seems every single knitter in the world has already discovered and knit it. But that doesn’t matter. I was the last person to knit the ubiquitous Clapotis, too.
The thing that the Clapotis and Chevron have in common – apart from the fact they’re both scarves and they’re both stunning – is that a person (especially a Libra-type person with a bad case of Options Paralysis Disorder) could spend entire days and weeks agonizing over the colour choices. However, whereas the Clapotis only requires that you choose ONE yarn, the Chevron requires that you choose TWO variegated yarns to knit together. Which makes the Chevron exponentially harder.
Normally you would choose two yarns that look good together, wouldn’t you? But from what I’ve been reading, this doesn’t necessarily result in the best Chevron scarf. Sometimes two yarns that look BAD together combine to make a glorious Chevron.
This does not make my decision any easier. I spent most of yesterday scouring the internet for Chevrons, to see what various colour combinations look like when mixed together. It was fun. But it really didn’t bring me a whole lot closer to a decision.
I have chosen the yarn – Blue Moon Fibre Arts Socks That Rock – but not the colours. This is where you come in. If you enjoy this sort of thing, would you please go over there and tell me which two colours you would choose for a Chevron? Also, I really like Fire on the Mountain. Which colour would you pick to go with that one? Thank you.
Um, I had never heard of the Chevron Scarf (bad knitter!!)
But now I know, I want to make one too.
Sorry I can’t help with the colours. WAY too much choice. I want all of them.
Wow! Give me about 3 hours and I’ll get back to you on this one.
You may be comforted to know that although I intend to one day, I have not yet knit a Clapotis (or a Chevron, to that matter.)
My choice to go with Fire on the Mountain: Sherbet
Oh, and STR? *yum*
Great challenge. I love picking out yarn and do so far to often for my own good. So it is really nice to make a suggestion for someone else. I copied a number of the full skein images and played around with them. I came up with this combo as a favourite.
and
Love STR. Happy knitting.
Well I guess my first time trying to link to a page did not work out so well.
The choices are Dreidel and Crabby McHappypants
There are quite a few colours in Fire mt. so that I would be tempted to match it with simpler and dark like Jabberwocky.
I also liked the idea of Gail’s Autumn Joy and Green Eyed Monster together. But it is difficult when you have to scroll up and down, which is maybe why I picked those two, since they are close together.
I would pick either bejeweled or fire on mountain… I am obsessively knitting cotton dish rags in all kinds of colours…
Oh, I did not listen to your instructions. I would Eggplant to go with Fire on Mountain.
I think Grandma’s flower garden with Fire on the mountion. It would commpliment it without having the same colors.
Fire on the mountain and puck’s mischief would be my choice if you love the fire on the mountain.
My personal choice would be different – but here’s the colour mixing strategy I take – pick a rainbow varigated you love (fire on the mountain) then pick a second varigated that has a more definite colour theme (purple and green for instance) that has a common thread in the first varigated I picked.
My personal choice would be petroglyphs and Gail’s Autumn Joy
Hi
My pick would be green eyed monster with str-3
lol now as a non-knitter I need to go see what a chevron pattern is to find out if there is a crochet equivalent to play with
ok I looked at the pattern
I would go with mr greenjeans or increasable shrinking violet with fire on the mountain
*giggles* We’re helpful, aren’t we? Many answers, many different colourways.
OK, I printed out the colors and my decision is cracked canyon. Held with fire on the mountain the oranges contrast nicely with the blues in fire. You’re welcome!
Well, I would choose Chapman Springs to go with Fire on the Mountain, so that should tell you which one NOT to go with because I’m notoriously bad at things like this. Pretty yarns though. Must not go to that site again…
Christmas Balls or Farmhouse…but they are all GORGEOUS, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them.
My very favourite is Puck’s Mischief. I love it so much I can’t think to pair it with anything. Maybe Waterlilies.
I do, however, have three picks to go with Fire on the Mountain and they are Red Rock Canyon, Crabby McHappypants and Firebird.
I love Iolite and Lucky
Wow. I’d be tempted do something like Jewel of the Nile with it – similar colourway but more muted.
And I am going to go block my first ever clapotis right this minute.
i’m one of those colour-bland males who struggles with this sort of thing (well, specifically with ‘lochness’) so instead let me put a little irish on that lob: is there a name for two things you hate that blend well? eg pizza w gravy, or that elvis/zeppelin reggae band, or religious ecstacy and self-corrective tendencies, or interesting questions with horrible examples (mine, not yours – i’m still vascilating between typhoon tina and jubilation)
My brain is now frozen. No way could I ever make a Chevron, as I could never decide either!
I like firebird and red rock canyon.
I pick Scottish Highlands to go with Fire on the Mountain. Well now, this is all really going to make your decision easier, isn’t it?
I copied almost every colour into my “Ideas for Art” folder because I loved them all. a lot cheaper than ordering all my favourites. Yarn is a wonderful way to choose colours to paint with.
I’ve wanted to make one of these for a while now, but never seem to get around to it. It’s so hard to choose colours, especially over the internet.
Have you checked out any of the local stores for suitable yarns? Choosing yarns and colours is much more fun (and easier) when you’ve got the yarn options in front of you!
Also, it sounds lame, but using the old “colour wheel” helps me too!
I just finished a striped vest in two Noro colourways. I wasn’t sure about putting two really different colourways together, so I picked one colourway that was full of my favourite colours, and another that was dull on its own but went well with the first colourway. I was really happy with the end result. So I’d suggest something like Autumn to go with Fire on the Mountain.
