A grab-bag of updates

Health update:

Yesterday Nancy left a bottle of wine at my door, so I got a little high on wine and Robaxicet and it seemed to help me turn the corner on this backache. (Thank you Nancy!) I’m still bent over and walking weirdly, but there’s definitely an improvement in terms of pain and flexibility. I think I’ll be able to have to go back to work tomorrow.

Home update:

It’s funny how you put off doing things when you can do them, but you suddenly want to do them when you can’t. (I say this like you do it too, but maybe you don’t.) I’m thinking specifically of the outrageous weeds which are my front garden. These things are taller than I am, and I’m not even kidding. I had no desire to weed the garden until I was immobilized by this backache, and now it’s driving me nuts that I can’t.

Duncan update:

In other news, PetSmart has run out of Feliway, which is the kitty aromatherapy product the vet recommended to help Duncan feel happier so he wouldn’t pee on the bed again. I went to two PetSmarts last week and they were both out of it. They’ve got it on back order, but Duncan hasn’t peed on anything else since the original two incidents, so maybe I’ll just save the $38 and consider the problem solved.

Camera update:

I’m leaning towards the Canon Powershot A650, but I might be just as happy with a less expensive camera.

Struggling artist update:

I made this.

So far untitled

It’s a mixed media collage. It incorporates acrylic paints, image transfers of old photographs and a playing card, sheet music, crumpled paper, and text blocks from classic feminist books.

I like it!

  • Love that piece! Glad to hear the backache is easing! That kind of major pain is demoralizing AND immobilizing. Not a winning combo.

I like it too. I’m also glad to hear about the pain relief. And I know what you mean about really wanting to do things when you can’t. When I was recuperating from my hysterectomy, I wanted to garden and do housework, not just sit around the house and read and knit. I had doctor’s orders to do nothing, not even drive, for 6 weeks. So I cheated a little bit, here and there, and I puttered around the house.

I love that art. It would look lovely in my bedroom in a nice frame. And I’m glad you’re on the mend. I suggest not letting up on the wine until you’re perfectly all right again — and then maybe for a bit longer, just in case. And, have you thought of just hiring someone who needs some spare cash to come and deal with your weeds?

  • Good job on the collage and happy to hear you’re up and about a bit. Hamel-the-Camel is looking for some pocket shekels and may be able to help you with your weed problem.

  • Thank you all for the kind comments about my collage. (It’s not mandatory though. My feelings won’t be hurt if someone says they don’t like it. Honestly.)

    Any ideas for titles?

Roro – yeah, it DOES get a little demoralizing after the novelty wears off. I figure all I need is a walker and a dowager’s hump and I could pass for 82 this week.

XUP, brilliant idea. Skylark, your timing couldn’t be better. Please bring your camel around front.

  • Zoom, I like your art.

As for the back, I strongly recommend physiotherapists. There are many close by your office. I’ve gone from having periods of incapacition at least once a year to five years free of them since I went to a physio and did what she told me to do.

  • I have been very happy with the Canon Powershot A510 and A570IS. Why do you think the A650 is worth the extra money, over the $200 A570? Unless you plan to make pretty big enlargements, the extra megapixels won’t be noticed.

Also, for only very slightly more, you could get a kit version of an older Canon dSLR, such as the Rebel XT.

  • You predicted it would go away on its own! Don’t you love it when you’re right? Dowager’s hump, indeed.

    Fragments Through Rose-Colored Glasses

  • David, I saw a physiotherapist a few years ago for a running problem. She said I was the only client she’d ever had who did ALL the exercises faithfully, even though each week she kept piling on more. I might go back, since I’m starting to accept that this is a recurring problem.

Milan, good points, but I’ve already ordered the A650 (at a considerably lower price than shown in that link, by the way, thanks to David Scrimshaw, who sent me a link to pricecanada.com – I saved about $130).

    Nursemyra – thank you!

Julia, I knew it would. But it did take longer than usual, so I was starting to think I might have to go to the doctor.

    XUP – I like it.
