Look what I found at lunchtime today! It’s a modern day nativity scene, called If Larry O’Brien Ran Bethlehem. It’s on a telephone pole on Elgin Street, near Somerset.
It’s not a Swap Box (it’s got a glass or plexiglass front), but it looks to me like the work of Maks, the Swap Box Artist. I love how his work keeps getting more political.
(As always, you can click any of the pictures to enlarge them. Even if you never enlarge images, I think you should make an exception just this once!)
There’s even a Kindness Meter in Bethlehem! (I think Jesus was born homeless, wasn’t he?)
This is my favourite piece of street art yet. It’s got everything: creativity, seasonal appeal, social commentary and political humour. Two thumbs up for Maks, if indeed he is the artist. Keep ’em coming!

It’s AWESOME! Thanks for sharing this wonderful contemporary piece. Wow!
Brilliant! Reminds me of the Fire boxes you’d see on the poles in the old days.
Thanks for sharing, we’ll be sure to pay it a visit! Looks great!
I hate to sound repetative, but all I can think is “brilliant”.
The more I study this piece, the more I want to petition the City of Ottawa Art Gallery to showcase it. In fact, they could have an entire gallery of art pieces on the topic of “Mayor O’Brien: his legacy” or something.
Grencolander – I love that idea of getting the City’s own Art Gallery to showcase the art the mayor has inspired. And this would definitely be a pivotal piece in that exhibition. I don’t know how you exhibit street art in a gallery though, since it’s so ephemeral. Any thoughts about that?
Chair – Welcome, sit down, stay awhile. Fire boxes on the street posts? It’s ringing a faint and distant bell, but I don’t know if I ever actually saw one myself or just remember them from old films.
Malva and Grace – I’m happy you liked it and said so.
haha, lovely!
Methinks at some point in the future a Last Supper might be in order to celebrate our wonderful mayor. Terry Kilrea, of course, would be Judas, the betraying disciple, and other city council members should play the role of Jesus’s disciples…
