I know! I saw this in the paper this morning! When I first got to Ottawa in 1984 (too long ago to contemplate) I shopped there – I lived over on Gladstone. Wowie – nothing lasts forever, as the angel Michael said about Mesopotamia.
Apparently they got caught selling cigarettes to minors, and lost their cigarette-selling license for a number of weeks. If you’ve ever seen the line-ups to buy the cheapest smokes in town in Big Bud’s basement, you know they must have been raking in tens of thousands of dollars a day in cigarettes alone. I guess a few weeks of no smoke money was more than they could take.
Big Bud would roll over in his grave if he knew his kids had driven his store into the ground in the 3 years since he died.
He was such an obnoxious man, but he knew how to make money – hire kids, exploit them, buy cheap, sell cheap, and live by the motto “The customer is always wrong, and so is the staff.”
R.I.P. Big Bud’s. Ottawa won’t be the same without you.

I feel lost.
